Greetings from the principal

Manila Japanese School Principal Yasumasa Kajiyama

Thank you for visiting the website of the Manila Japanese School.

Due to the global spread of infectious diseases, the Manila Japanese School was also affected, and from March 2020, face-to-face classes were not permitted and classes were conducted online. Teachers and students enthusiastically worked on what they could do online. Online student councils, committee activities, club activities, peace studies meetings that connect Hiroshima and Manila. In addition, we have carried out activities with the support of the Japanese Association, such as interacting with local Japanese companies.

Face-to-face classes have been permitted since November 26, 2021, and various activities have become possible since February.
At the end of March 2022, the total number of students was 135, but since April it has increased from 191 to 201, reaching 218 in June, and surpassing 220 in July. is.

In addition, it is expected to exceed 280 students in the second semester after the summer vacation. Although it is still far from the 460 students before the pandemic, the number of students is gradually returning.

(About school history)
Our school opened as the Manila Japanese School in 1917 with an elementary school, but was closed in 1944 due to the war. After that, in response to the strong desire of many Japanese living in the area to open a Japanese school, it was reopened in 1968 (Showa 43), and 72 students are enrolled (at that time: 62 in elementary school, 10 people).

The year 2022 marks the 54th anniversary of the school's opening.
Our school is the only Japanese school in the Philippines, and an average of 460 students from Metro Manila attend school every year.
Start time is early at 7:30. After coming to school by school bus (scheduled to resume operation) or by private car, after school, classes begin with various events such as morning study, reading time, storytelling, physical education morning meeting, music morning meeting, etc. Until the end of May, it is the dry season, and although the temperature is over 30 degrees every day, during breaks and lunch breaks, they are playing energetically on the playground and in the gymnasium.

(learning environment)
I am also studying hard. All classrooms and special classrooms at our school are equipped with a 50-inch electronic blackboard and a document camera for each grade. In addition, we have established a LAN network within the school and are focusing on ICT education.
We prepare and use an iPad for each elementary school student, and a Chromebook for each junior high school student. We have created a facility environment for the improvement of children's academic ability.
Since 20% of the families have international marriages, we hold a "Japanese class" every Friday for children who have problems with the Japanese language.
In a learning environment comparable to that of Japan, the children strive to learn what they should learn as Japanese children and students. All of our teachers and staff are working hard every day to educate our children, imagining that they will play an active role in the world in the future.

(school motto)
Our school's motto is "Kind, smart, strong". We aim to develop such children and students, in other words, to nurture a well-balanced personality in the three areas of moral education, intellectual education, and physical education. It's about nurturing.

When you enter M.J.S (Manila Japanese School), "everyone becomes kind, cheerful, and obedient. Children who were worried about leaving Japan soon blend in with their friends and smile." There is a word called MJS magic. I think that it is a word that leads to the heart of Confucius.

"Learn at school, discipline at home, and grow in the community." This is the starting point of education, and we believe that education can function only with this foundation. Thankfully, at our school, the PTA plays a central role in various initiatives. In addition, related organizations and institutions in the Philippines are giving us full cooperation as a school cheering squad.
In order to nurture the ability to survive in the future, we identify what children need and work hand-in-hand with their families, making use of their educational skills and experiences to work together.

The number of students in the elementary and junior high schools is 460, but the number of students has decreased considerably in the midst of the corona wreck. I became enrolled.

Without permission from the Philippine government, all schools have been unable to hold face-to-face classes from March 13, 2020 until now. Our school has started online classes. From October, elementary school lower grades will have 5 hours of classes every day, and other grades will have 6 hours of classes every day. Each homeroom teacher and subject teacher devises and advances learning.

Students are actively participating in various activities, thinking about what they can do now. The "MJS Festival", which starts on September 24th, will be streamed online again this year, but each grade has devised and made it worth watching.
